Executive Director

Linda Law is a Digital / Holographic artist with a long history of working with the breaking edge of new technology. Sailing to New York from the UK in 1971 her early days were focused on scientific imaging and research in her work in the Biochemistry Department at SUNY, Stony Brook. This early work involved imaging with a Transmission Electron Microscope, photography and the processing of other research data using the mainframe computer in the Engineering Department and gave her very early entry into these technologies.

Following her initial exposure to Holography (at the first major exhibition of holograms in New York at the International Center of Photography), it became clear to her that this was a medium she unequivocally wanted to explore creatively. Returning to London in 1977, she became a part of an active and growing holographic community in the UK, supporting herself as a Rock and Roll photographer while experimenting in Holography (as Artist in Residence in the Physics Department at The City Unversity, London).  More details

Workshop Leaders

Sam Moree has been a pioneer of holography since 70’s.
He operates the New York Holographic Laboratory which he co-founded in 1977. Moree has taught holography to hundred of students and currently runs workshops at the Holocenter and teaches a holography class with the School for Visual Art. In 1996 he was awarded a fellowship at the Academy of Media Arts (KHM) in Cologne, Germany. Moree is renown for his sculptural pieces that incorporate holograms and his work with rainbow holography.

Previous Directors

Dr Martina Mrongovius is an Australian artist and designer with a background in applied physics. Mrongovius helped establish the Korean HOLOcenter and worked for seven years at the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne, Germany.  In 2012 Mrongovius completed her PhD on how holographic images are encountered through the Spatial Information Architecture Laboratory at RMIT University in Melbourne Australia.  Mrongovius joined the HoloCenter in 2008 and became the Creative Director in 2009.

Ana Maria Nicholson, PhD co-founded the HoloCenter, was the organizations director for 9 years and currently chairs the HoloCenter Board. She has been involved in holography since 1973 and is a highly regarded holographic artist. Nicholson was assistant director of the Center for Experimental Holography at the University of Hawaii (1976 – 1980), and directed the New York’s Museum of Holography’s Portrait Studio until 1994. Nicholson has created holographic portraits of many famous people including Walter Cronkite, Keith Haring, David Byrne, Gloria Steinem, Philippe de Montebello, Philip Johnson, Tony Benet and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Dan Schweitzer (co-director 1998 – 2001)
Schweitzer co-founded the Center for Holographic Arts in 1998 where he served as co-director until his death in December 2001. A respected artist and educator Schweitzer’s work pushed the artform of holography. In 1977 he and Sam Moree established the New York Holographic Laboratory where they taught holography and produced stunning artwork. In 1987 Schweitzer receive a Shearwater award for his contribution to the art of holography.

Ikuo Nakamura (co-director 2002 – 2006)
Nakamura is a media artist and holographer. He learned the medium at the Science University of Tokyo and the New York Holographic Laboratory. His experimental multi-media works have been shown in Europe and Japan and his 3D films are gaining worldwide recognition. His awards include an Artist In Residence at the Museum of Holography, a Shearwater grant, Japan’s Suzuki Masane prize, a fellowship with the Academy of Media Arts, Cologne, BeFilm awarded “Los Andes” Best Stereography, and he received the Grand Prize for “Atmosphere” at the 3D Korea International Film Festival.
