We are looking for artists who bring their own light

The customary white-walled gallery, sterile and brightly lit, has been a predictable standard and constant adversary for many visual artists. In a spiritual sequel to SPACE:LIGHT in 2019, Edge of Light will be a “dark space” exhibition curated by Jonathan Sims. Gallery lights will be switched off, and all illumination will emanate from the artists’ work.

This is an invitation to artists working in light to spend an extended period to experiment with and develop site-specific work free from the constraints of gallery lighting and pressing installation schedules. Artists will have access to the gallery space for at least two weeks, culminating in a group exhibition. Each project will receive a $800 stipend** which should include your equipment and transportation costs.

Six artists will each be given a sizable portion of the space at The Plaxall Gallery in which to work and develop projects using artificial light. We are also seeking artists who have ideas on how to engage the outdoor spaces around the gallery and along Anable Basin at night, which may include creative lighting or projected imagery/video.

In your proposal please include:
– Name + preferred pronouns
– A link to your website (preferred but not required)
– A brief artist bio (200 words max)
– A description of how you use light in your work (200 words max)
– A proposal or concept of how you would use the space and time at The Plaxall Gallery (400 words max)
– Images or links to videos to support your proposal

A virtual tour of the gallery is HERE (this was before the theater space was annexed). One moveable wall is available and we have plinths/pedestals and power cables that can be used. There is a ladder/scaffold that reaches the ceiling. The outdoor area can be seen during Culture Lab LIC events and the white boat could be an installation site, however does not have power. If you have other questions reach out.

*Please be aware that because of the ongoing pandemic, there are many unknowns that the gallery, curators and artists may have to face, and we ask that artists be flexible as we negotiate safe social distancing protocols. Our hope is to safely allow small groups of viewers into the space once the exhibition is complete, but city and state mandates and other safety concerns may cause this to change.
