VIA PLEBISCITO, CATANIA
As an immigrant, I have been drawn to explore the idea of the tangibility of spaces that we, as social individuals, pass through daily in our lives. Sometimes we have a feeling of belonging to particular spaces and sometimes consider certain spaces our own. Since I tend to not have a feeling of belonging to places in my daily life, I grasp onto physical environments, allowing them to become palpable in my itinerant life. I recreate interiors while focusing attention and sensitivity to the way the atmospheric colors and light are diffused.
I am currently working with time-lapse video projections overlapped upon oil paintings and full-size room installations. The intention is to break out of the monumental feeling a traditional 2D painting presents and transport the viewer into the reality of now. I seek to interrupt the feeling of eternity that paintings carry by highlighting individual brushstrokes with projections. This way the installations draw attention to the subject matter being alive, ongoing, and in need of immediate attention.
