Xiaowei Chen

The definition of freedom is based on a certain degree of self-discipline. The broadest freedom should be human’s mind. There is no way to have a unified definition. An idea might be as light as a feather. While a lot of ideas piles together, it become ponderable and valuable. I use the refraction and multi-reflection of the mirror to extend the handmade feathers installation in the box which indicates natural life. It is a metaphor of our feelings of freedom obtained in the process of thoughts extension.

Xiaowei Chen – FEATHER III

I have chosen simple tools to record my immediate sensations. Doing so I try to discover what lies within that might be more real and true.

Xiaowei Chen works in a wide range of media, including painting, video, and ink drawing. Her elaborately rendered drawings explore emotional states and human experience through iconography borrowed from the natural world. Often, she employs a long, narrow format that calls to mind ancient scrolls, allowing the viewer to fully immerse themselves in the work as the eye travels the length of her complex, densely detailed compositions. She seeks to evoke that which is impossible to capture through language.
