The Plaxall Gallery, Long Island City, New York
A New York City based visual artist who originally hails from Texas. His practice is characterized by brightly colored geometric abstractions and simple, minimalist symbology that evokes language and universal, ancient design. His work is intended to elicit a sense of familiarity, but his compositions remain stubbornly non-objective and his work refuses translation.
Our time is distinguished by its complexity and its compulsion to futurism; I consider the final work successful if it can evoke the aesthetics and the contradictions in our contemporary moment.
Jonathan started painting in San Antonio, first showing in 2012, and moved to NYC in 2013. Major exhibitions include Governor’s Island Art Fair in 2015, a significant solo exhibition at Flux Factory in Queens in 2017, a site-specific installation at Lehman College in the Bronx, and the Islamic Arts Festival in the United Arab Emirates in 2018. He has been awarded fellowships and residencies at BRIC Media Arts, the Wassaic Project, the School for Visual Arts, Listhús in Iceland, and ARoS Kunstmuseum in Denmark with Flux Factory, where he still maintains a studio and sits on the board.
